Removing valve cover head bolts

There are NO head bolts. Not sure what you are talking about. The head is attached with 14 studs and 14 nuts. The valve cover has 10 small bolts. On the floor of the valve chamber, between valve 4 and 5, there is a nut which attaches to one the of center main bearing cap bolts. What is it you need to know??????

When removing the head nuts, I like to loosen each one (all of them) a quarter turn first, then start removing them.
Very good advice Tom.
When you think about it. It makes little since to completely remove them one by one as this will cause uneven torque and stress all across the head. It is almost the same as using the Full torque on each head bolt while assembling the head.
Best to gradually bring up the torque evenly following the proper sequence.
Especially if your running an Aluminum Head.
When I build an engine I usually torque in sets of 20Lb increments. A properly lubed Bolt/Nut this is enough torque to get past the Break away Friction point.

I don't mean to sound insolent as I don't think I understand the question. As presented it leads me to ask once they are removed, what then?

I'm in the same boat, and that's why I offered the head nut advice......just in case.

It could be he just wants to remove the valve cover to check for or clean sludge.

We need more information. And is there a particular problem with the engine?

Title says valve cover and body says head?

I know the simple answer is that you use a wrench but it seems we have to be missing some information.
