Removing the Shifter

Exactly what are you calling the "shifter"? Are you talking about the entire housing, or the gear lever within the shift housing? If itis the lever, you need a spring depressor to depress the spring where the "C" clip can be removed. If its the housing, find neutral and remove the fastening screws & the e-brake lever (if so equipped) and lift straight off the transmission case.

Like Brent - I assume you mean the gear shift lever which sits in the upper part of the gearbox - the tower assembly. I would strongly advise reading a good manual like THE JIM SCHILD Restorer's Model A Shop Manual Ch.8.
Schild describes removal of the dished spring clip without a special tool which is the 'spring depressor' that Brent mentions. In his description the lever is in a vice and lock pliers are over the ball end to prevent the very strong spring flying out and necessitating a trip to your local friendly eye surgeon (a guy like me!). He advises wearing eye protection! The reassembly in Schild's description is also quite lengthy and needs careful reading. The spring depressor tool might be the way to go!

Wow. I should have known. I bought a nice chrome shift lever to replace my original one. I never dreamed it would be so much trouble. Thanks for the info.

Go for it. It isn't as difficult as it sounds. Keep your original, though. You'll be glad you did later.
