I was trying to remove the starter on a T engine and can not figure out hoh to slide it out. Should I remove the Bendix spring from the rear first, or dose the whole assembly wiggle out some how? Thanks Ed S.
You are best off removing the bendix entirely. If you remove the front retainer bolt and spring cap, *** Don't Drop or Loose The Woodruff Key***, use a magnet, once this is done the entire bendix will slide off with out further disassembly. If you don't do it this way you risk damaging the magneto coils. Good Luck, Dan Ph #: 701-200-2319
Yes as Dan said. You have to remove the "WHOLE" bendix. The retainer at the front is/should be a tight fit and sometimes need a puller to remove. A quick puller: use a battery cable "C" clamp style to pull the piece off after you take out the bolt. The spring can stay in place on the main part.
It is best to also replace the tabbed lock washer. After bending the ear a couple of times the tab tends to break off.
Thanks for the info. I wanted to put the engine up on my Model A engine stand bracket but the starter is in the way. Is there a different type of engine stand bracket that would allow the starter to remain on the motor?
This is an example of when looking at the Ford manual before you start a job can save you some hassle and expense. The T is relatively simple, but it contains some surprises. I made the same mistake of trying to pull the starter without checking the book. Fortunately I stopped without wrecking the coil ring.
