Removing starter end bushings

Working on replacing the brush end bushing on my starter since the outer edges appear to be cracking. I've search and see bushings addressed but no where did I find an explanation as to how to remove the old bushing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know of an illustration showing the correct positioning of the starter brushes ?

You can take a tap that will give you a good bit on the bushing and thread it in when it bottoms it will start taking the bushing out. (one way of doing it)
The thru end you can hit the tap with a drift and knock it out.

you can also saw thru the bushing to brake it and remove the pieces.
On the brushes, look closely at the end plate and you will see 2 of the brush holders are insulated from the plate and 2 are grounded. The insulated brushes go into the insulated holders.
Make sure the brushes and holders, are clean before you install the bushes, they need to move freely in the holders.

If you don't have a correct sized tap, you might try filling the bushing cavity about 1/2 to 2/3 with grease and push the armature into it. If the bushing is not totally worn out, it should be able to push the bushing out. Careful when you put the new bushing it so it does not squeeze down and cause the armature to drag.

I'm doing the same job on a starter right now. Tomorrow I'll try to take a picture. Basically if the starter is in the vice with the drive end down, then you;ll be looking down at the 4 brushes and they spin off in a clockwise position.

I take a 6" piece of coat hanger and make a loop for my finger, then make a 1/4" right angle bend in the other end. This is handy to pull the springs back so you can use a small needle nose plier to tuck each brush into the holder.

I think I'm going to make a split tool that will tuck into the end of the bushing and spread so the lip of the tool grabs the rear of the bushing. I can then screw my slide hammer into the tool and pull it out.

Thanks Tom. I was hoping you would reply. I've always seen your solutions/insights as great information.

OK, I finally got around to taking a picture of the brushes, and you can see how they are located in a clockwise position. If you tuck each brush out the window opening you can then slip the end plate in place. Be sure to put a dab of oil or light grease on the bushing first. You can then use the bent coat hanger hook and a needle nose plier to tuck each brush into it's holder.
