Ok I need to remove the spring from a valve assembly on my 8ba what tool do I need(pics please) I was using a old model a spring tool I got at a yard sale but it broke so I need to get the RIGHT too for the job.....or if you have a easy way to get them off without the tool...
Probably the best and safest tool is a GOOD quality c-clamp type valve spring compressor. These are available at any reputable auto parts house. The cheapie ones may work but seem to bend easily at the fork tip. These are used on modern OHV engines primarily but work well on flattie V8 valves of the 49-53 type.
This is one of the better ones at around $45-50.00.
I have an old one like Mac,s, clamp it in a vise. I just use the valve & guide to lap & adjust, then put the "cartridge" together. The guide seals were so much hassle, I gave up on them, but to each his own.
The slickest one I ever saw looked a lot like the one Mac posted but it was air operated. Very fast acting and significantly less muscle involved. It seemed to keep the air free of blue verbage, too. Don't know who made it. I was too impressed to look for details at the time.
