Fordie's

the working plan is to

rotate engine and hopefully lifters

will raise up high enough to grab them

with pliers with a shop rag around lifter.

plan to store them is 2 egg crate's to store them in.

anybody have any good ideas?

Lifters in a Y block can only be removed from the bottom. The eaiest way is with the engine upside down. Remove the cam, then the lifters will come out. Keep them in order with a chunk of scrap 2x4 drilled with 16 1/2 inch holes with an arrow pointing front.
The lifters do not wear out, they can be refaced.

Fordy's

are these 'mushroom' lifter's maybe?

T shaped lifter with a big surface area

where they ride on the cam?

so there's absolutely no way there

coming out the top?

next time i'm out there i'll see if

there's way to look in there.

Fordy's

can't tell what kind of lifter's are

in there at this point!:)

There's nothing to tell. It's a Ford Y-Block, it has mushroom lifters. Like Don said, they only come out from the bottom. No offense, but I strongly suggest you buy a Ford shop manual with a Y-Block section in it and study the hell out of it.

fordy's

putting up with this kind of nonsense

doesn't make the manual on cd

get here any quicker.

will order harmonic dampener puller soon.

Have A Nice Day!

the guys get a little testy when questions are ask that can be found in any shop manual, they like there talents and experiencs pushed a little by questions ask that cant be found in shop manuals, but keep asking questions and the will keep answering , lol

Seriously? You needed to confirm it? You couldn't just believe that Don and the others are telling you the truth?

Fellow geezers; we have here a youngster who is good with a camera, sharing pictures, and he has questions. We can pee on him, or help him. How many youngsters are out there who are willing to put down the toy in thier hand and get that nasty inside a Y block crud all over themselves up to the elbows and seem to enjoy it? The poor kid may not be clean untill a week after Easter, he needs all the help he can get. I'm lucky, I found a 1959 Motors Manual at a swap meet in about 1962 or so, its my bible! I highly recomend anyone wanting to play with an old car to hunt down a Motors manual at any cost. Dont give up All American Boy, you GO!~

ole don

maybe when you tow your mobile

to the salt flats you can make

a detour and bring y block head some

bird food for his 'bluebird of happiness'.

i found out some cool stuff about

y block's in the meantime.

this new internet stuff, you know!:)

When you get your manual, you will find that the Ford engineers describe how to remove and replace lifters while the engine is in the car. There are lots of people who have done it, but I don't think any will tell you it is easy.
The first thing you should get yourself is a four wheel engine support stand. It makes light work of working on any engine. You will need to get yourself some decent hi-tensile bolts to mount the engine to the support plate.
Something like this is what you need.

fordy's

lot of distractions here!:)

since they are solid lifters

there are NO oil passages in the block

to pump up hydraulic lifters.

whew! glad i got that out!:)

There is talk on the yblocks forever site that there are moves afoot for aftermarket casting of new yblock engine blocks. The word is that they will have hydraulic lifters, wider bore spacing, four bolt mains, the list goes on. The talk is that the bare blocks will be around $3000 from memory.

mr 55

with a regular y block the

situation is might as well get

to like solid lifters cause it

won't take hydraulics.

anyhow, going to continue

patiently waiting for harmonic dampener puller!:)
