Removing grease from crank case

Going to be awhile before I pull the pan and see how bad this is going to be, but one of the engines I bought a couple of months back is likely full of grease. The previous mechanical wizzard that owned it drilled, tapped and installed a grease zerk at the timing gear. I pulled the dip stick to see how it looked and found the dip stick was likely off something else and had a groove in it. As I expected the dip stick is caked with grease/ oil mix. I wiped the dip stick off and found thin strings of metal in the grease. I am only guessing at this point, but likely he was trying to quiet a bad timing gear. Hard to say how bad the engine is til I tear it down, but I shutter to think about what I might find although the engine seems to turn ok. Does anyone have a good solution to help to thin the grease up some before removing the pan? Thanks Rod

Gasoline should work as well as anything, but I would just wait until the pan is off. A hot summer day is best, but they are becomming scarse.
