removing gear shift lever

Hi everyone. I appreciate everyone's help with removing the body off my 31, 5 window coupe. I'm ready to go except the gear shift lever. I punched out the drift pin, but it didn't feel like it wanted to come out without damaging something. Can anyone tell me how to remove it properly? I want to reassemble it down the road. Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

Do you just need to get the shifter out of the way for body removal? If so, you will need to remove to top of the transmission ( shift tower) as a whole.

Yes, just for removing the body, the ****** works fine. No work needed, just don't want to damage any thing. Any advice as far as reassembling it? Thanks

Pretty self- evident once the top is off. New gasket, line up the two shift forks with the collars on the two sliding gears.
Perhaps someone has some pictures?

Shift to neutral, so the rails aren't forward into the bellhousing, then lift straight up.

When the top is off cover stuff the hole with rags so nothing falls inside
