Removing Fordomatic Transmission

being that it is separate bellhousing and transmission
is it better to unbolt the transmission from
the bellhousing?
or just leave transmission and bellhousing together
and unbolt from engine?
which is less destructive on converter seal and
less spillage of transmission fluid?
what kind of 'inspection cover' is on bottom
of bellhousing?
just see bent up tin on drivers side
note: engine & trans are on ground

Remove the bell housing from the block leaving the converter connected. It will probably damage the seal, but if you are splitting it would be advisable to replace it anyway.
There will be some spillage from the converter but that is almost unavoidable.
That's what I would do.

Be careful when pulling the Ford-o-matic and bellhousing assembly off the engine so as not to damage the converter hub. If you break off one of the dogs on the hub, it will require dismantling the converter to remove it. Those hubs are hard to find and very expensive too.
Put blocks of wood under the the engine oil pan near the rear and get someone to help pull the transmission straight off the engine (leaving the converter attached to the engine)
There should be no fluid spillage either way you choose to dissassemble it.

plan is to take ****** off of separate bellhousing
noticed ****** dipstick has been out the whole time
did grab it before driving off with engine & trans
