Removing Engne with no head?

Hey Folks,

With the heat breaking tonight on the East coast I plan on getting after the project and disassembly of the chassis.

i have been reading up on removing the engine and using eyelets in teh spark plug holes but the head is off the motor and only a stud or two still in the block.

My question is what thread/pitch bolt would work. I'll get a couple bolt, some flat washers and just screw a lifting chain to the deck. Or is there a better/easier way?

Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

Humble opinion:

I'd install 5 bolts, replace head, & remove engine.

If long protruding bolts have leverage forces applied sideways, the threaded hole in the cast iron block is stressed.

With head on, almost 0 side force & 0 leverage on bolts & almost 0 side force on block.

Some bolts have thin, brittle cast iron on some sides of bolts.

Sometimes, good idea to wear belt & suspenders on stage so your pants "cannot" fall off.

Personally I would bolt a piece of Angle Iron with a lifting hole cut in it to the blocK and lift away. That way no stress anywhere.

No problem. Have removed several engines withou a head on them. Using only a couple of head studs. Put a link over the stud with a large washer and a nut. Try to lift the engine as evenly as possible. I prefer to use one of the longer studs at the front and then a link as far to the rar as ppossible. I am not sure which studs you still have so I can not advise you as which ones to use. Rod

I would follow bill's advice if I lifted from the top of the block.

I like to use a nylon rope or an old seat belt and loop it around the carb and water inlet. Then place the chain hook in the middle of the double loop. I'll see if I can find a picture. :)

Here's one picture. I have a better picture, but can't find it right now.

We got the motor out! Got a 4 foot piece of chain, couple grade 8 7/16 bolts and some washers and bolted it down.

Clam shell came right off. Had to wizz off the wishbone socket bolts, they jsut spun and had to take the sawzall to one of the rear motor mount brackets, bolt would not come out. Front motor mount bolts came out no problem.

Then up up and away. motor out and on a furniture dolly and stapped down nice and tight.

Then we just kept going and have a pile of parts:) Dissasembly thread coming soon.

Good Eye, Tom.

I am missing the Steering Column/gearbox and RHD specific manifold so I plan on changing it over, unless there is a compelling reason to keep it RHD.

Over the last year or so I have collected all the LHD parts needed to switch it over.

I still have the RHD steering arms and pedals. The steering arms are shot and would need the balls replaced. I'll probably post them and the bell housing up on the for sale section once I separate the trans and motor.

Awesome father son project! I see you used a real engine hoist hehe. Some of you may remember MY engine hoist:

(dont worry i finally disassembled it down to a 3ft high sawhorse where the stakebed is resting on it)
