I've got car on jacks from frame, trying to remove suspension links. Do I need to put weight on the spring to hammer out the links to reduce the pressure from "hanging" with car jacked up. Or should I just jack car from axle?
You mean “shackles”. Yes, you will never get the shackle links off if the spring and axle are hanging free. Put a little jack under the axle to relieve the weight, but not enough to raise it off the frame’s jackstand.
There was a KRW tool specific to that task, similar to a pickle fork. The tool was only good for use on early models before, I believe, 1939, as the threaded portion was shortened due to clearance issues, making the tool obsolete.
I would use care using force with a hammer without proper backup.
so if I follow the hitting the hanger bracket, put the hammer on the stud of link and bracket arm? I was trying to place hammer on back of link and then hitting with another hammer the link stud. Worked on the rears, but don't have the room for a good swing on the fronts with the wheel hub on .
I redid my front end about 10 years ago. All the tapered studs ( tie rod ends, dog bones, etc) succumbed to the remover in this kit. I haven't used it since but it sure saved a LOT of cussing.
The little device on the lower right in the picture attaches to the connection, a threaded bolt presses against the tapered stud and is turned with a wrench, tension applied, a light tap with a hammer ,not often needed, and the stud pops out without damage to the threads.
Fuggedabout swinging the hammer with a backup anvil. Too easy to damage the part, or yourself.
Object is to put a back up on the bracket. If you hit the stud, the link is ruined. If you cannot get a good swing at it, have someone else hold the back up hammer and use a bar or anything solid to apace out where you can hit it.
