Removing Corn Head grease from steering

Just FWIW, A long time friend has a 32 phaeton that he put a BB truck steering gear in long ago. I only saw it in passing about 15 years ago when he had it out of hiding briefly. I can't say how much was changed to get it in, but he did it to get easier steering effort, might be a reasonable change to make.

A BB truck steering box is identical to that used in '32 passenger cars and commercial vehicles with the same ratio except every component is heftier. Steering effort reduction gained = zero.

BTW Car Guy Bill . . . from the looks of your member photo, looks like you have a really nice 34 Roadster. I happen to have one that is yet to be restored, but I will get to it in the next couple of years. Mine will be full-fendered like yours - but will have a hopped up Flatty in it. Best of luck!

I started building hotrods back in 1953 and i always wanted a '34 Roadster which I would make into a hotrod but it never happened. In about 1970 I ran across this '34 Cabriolet to convert but when I got it home and looked at it i realized that it was both nice and stock. knowing that they are only stock once I didn't have the heart to modify it. So here I am some 40 years later with a stock 34 Cabriolet that is difficult for me 84 year arms to maneuver at slow speeds.

Enjoy your 34 roadster and make it into what you want but don't wait too long, you might well regret it. Good luck.

No comments on the "Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00" vs "Cornhead Grease" which is better and why? And 'enhancing' which steering box lubricant with good ol STP?
Thanks.

I've been using Penrite grease in the steering boxes and Teflon seats in the tie rod and drag link ends of both my Model A's and my '34 roadster for decades. All steer easily enough for me and I am 87 with two bad shoulders. I should add that keeping the toe-in correct and tires inflated properly helps too.

Thank you for your reply. Please tell me more about the Teflon seats and where they I could purchase them.

You have given all the zerks a fresh squirt to see if that might be the problem, right? If it cures it, but only temporarily, maybe you do have worn rod ends or kingpin bushings and bearings.

I really don't see how cornhead grease can be improved upon in the steering box.

Good luck, and make sure to report back to us after you have discovered the solution.

Make sure it’s not getting tight somewhere else.
Maybe disconnect the drag link and see if it still stiff.
I had a modern vehicle that I thought the pump was defective and it was knuckle joint in the steering column that was starting to seize.
