Removing a fan blade

Does anyone know a good (easy) way to remove the fan from the water pump tapered shaft? I hate to just pound on the threaded end and hoping it comes lose. I don't necessarily need to save the shaft, but it would be nice to not ruin it.

I made a knock-off tool designed similar to the Wheel Knock-off Puller (# 6130 page 156) in Bratton's 2010 catalog. I used a piece of 1" hex stock and drilled and tapped a 7/16"-20 hole (double check this size cause I am going by memory on size) in one end of the shaft. Drill and bottom tap only about 2/3 of the length of the thread on the shaft (again, I do not remember the depth). Turn the tool onto the shaft to bottom it against the end of the shaft. Then have someone hold the fan blade by hand on each side of the housing while you give a sharp wrap to the end of the tool with a hammer. This should loosen the blade from the shaft. This method has worked for me. Don/WI Oops! Jack is correct. Bratton's does sell this tool and it is less expensive than making one. I made mine before they had one available!

Screw a nut half way on, then screw a bolt in the other half until it hits the shaft. Now you can hit the bolt with a hammer and shouldn't damage the shaft.

You can also use an old head stud and nut.Thread the nut halfway onto the stud, the screw the whole thing onto the pump shaft. You want to bottom the two shafts out against each other. The nut is just to hold them together and keep them in line. When you hit it you want the energy to go from one shaft to the other, not through the threads.Hold the pump hub in one hand, palm up,with your fingers straddling the middle, with the pump hanging down. Now hit the stud like you mean it.Don't fool around with a bunch of tapping or with a little hammer.Use a 3 pounder.A lot of times it pops off with one hit.
