Removing a '39 Fordor gas tank...

Ford barners...

Can the gas tank be removed from a '39 Fordor sedan through the trunk or out the bottom?

Or, does the body need to be removed from the frame to get it out?

Out the bottom. Remove the filler neck and the three mounting bolts and fuel line, then slide it toward the drivers side and drop the right side down. Probably have to take the exhaust loose, and may have to pry a little to get it far enough to the left to drop it down.

Never removed one on a 39, and filler necks vary. But they all (35 - 40) should come out the bottom, since the frame is the same and tanks only significant differences were filler neck related.
 
Pulled mine out last winter from the bottom. It was tight, especially around the filler neck, but it came out. Shoot the fasteners with PB Blaster or equivalent and let it set awhile. I didn't and one of the nuts spun in its cage. Not fun then.

Remove mine from a 39. Remove bolts, filler tube and disconnect the sending unit and pry the tank loose, push the tank to the left side and it will drop down allittle and pull it to the right side. MAKE SURE you remove all the gas of course. Bingo bango and it's out.... Good luck
 
Thanks, guys...figured Ford wouldn't require one to separate the body from the frame...now I just need to see if it will clear my dual exhaust...

The drivers side pipe is OK but the passenger side needs to have the frame clamp at the rear removed and the pipe pulled down and out towards the tire. I tied mine to a work bench next to the lift to keep it out of the way. G.M.
