Remove timing Gear Cover

I want to replace the front crank shaft oil seal so I need to remove the timing gear cover. The engine is installed in the car. I removed the bolts that fasten the yoke to the timing gear cover and the seven bolts that secure the cover to the block. I hit the cover where the generator mounts with a soft hammer but it didn't want to give. What should I do? Also, the cover bolts have holes in the heads. Am I supposed to run wire thru them? P.S. I did jack the engine up a little.

Two more bolts. They are on the gear cover on the starboard side of the engine, opposite the generator.

It is too bad you live on the other side of the US from me, because it would be fun to help you in person.

When you install the seal, put some assembly lube on the seal where it rubs against the pulley.

nkanimar, you have been a huge help even being on the other side of the U.S. There was a "hidden" bolt I hadn't removed where the generator mounts. I didn't need to remove the two bolts you were referring to. You said "put some assembly lube on the seal where it rubs against the pulley" are you referring to Lubriplate No 105? Why do I holes in my bolts?

I am not sure why the bolts have holes in the heads. Ford may have thought of using safety wire. I have never safety wired mine but make sure they are tight.

Lubriplate 105 would work. I use Permatex Ultra Slick 81950.

Holes in your bolts? You talking about the front motor mount yoke? The rear motor mount bolts have holes for safety wire, I suppose that the front mount bolts would have that also. Someone here will know for certain.

Somebody, sometime in the past just picked some bolts up that were handy and used them.
Yeah, I agree. The front motor mount bolts were not originally wired, but they did have split lock washers. Just your basic everyday hex head bolts.

Now the side motor mount bolts - they were wired, although in fairness I'd guess that well less than 100% of the current installations have wires in them. I would not be surprised if whoever installed that engine mixed up the bolts. You might check to see if someone installed the undrilled bolts in the side motor mounts and left a couple of the drilled bolts for the front. (I think they're the same size, but I'm happy to be corrected).
