Relacing fan bearing

I have a 48 ford and would like to place in sealed bearing in fan. Has anyone done this? I have done both my 26 and 27 Buicks and worked out good. Thanks

Believe that the 48 fan hub has a shaft and bushing. It should have a plug screwed in the hub that you remove it and put some 90 weight in there then turn the plug to the bottom to drain out the excess. To my knowledge the fan hub with a sealed bearing came with the later model 49-53 8BA engines .

not sure of year but there is a wide belt fan pully with a sealed bearing might be a truck i am sure some one on this forum will know

The 1949 Ford passenger car came with the 4 blade fan & hub assy, which was a sealed ball bearing. Ford crimped it into place I think, as they never sold the bearing separately (or the fan or hub for that matter). This was the only version of this with the wide belt.

The 1942-48 cars, and the 1948-53 Ford trucks used that oil filled fan & hub assy, which had no ball bearing. Beginning in 1950, the cars changed to a 3 bladed fan/hub assy (like the 49 Ford car) but they had the narrow belt pulley.

It seems that I remember someone finding a way to replace the 49 style bearing. May have required some machining and installation of a retaining clip, in order to use a standard ball bearing which could be replaced easily. If anyone has done that, perhaps they would put their experience out on the forum.

The bearing can be changed, between the fan hub and adjustable mount is a rubber washer up aginst the rear of the hub. Pull the rubber washer back to mount and you should be able to see a c-clip holding the bearing in the hub, remove the c-clip. The thin metal thimble in the center of the fan comes out and the bearing can then be pushed out the back of hub. The shaft/bearings are New Departure and are not available but NSK 885586 can be used, the shaft is a little longer on the fan side but still enough room in the hub for it and you are still able to put the thimble plug back in the fan.

The bearings are listed as water pump bearings.
