Registration

I went and registered my A today with my 1929 plates and it cost me 28 dollars and expires in the year 2050. Don't know if I can afford this car at these prices. LOL. I told my 9 year old grandaughter that went with me that she will have to register it the next time it's due because I will be 113 years old and probably can't drive then.

Wisconsin has you all beat, when I registered my A this summer it cost me a huge sum of $5 for a lifetime antique auto plate set. On top of that I was able to put a pair of WI 1929 original plates on as long as I carry the issued WI plates in the car. Seemed too good to be true, but that is how it is done!

BEEN AWHILE , bUT I BELIVE MY HISTORICAL PLATES FROM OHIO ARE LIFETIME. bEEN SO LONG I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT I PAID FOR THEM :D

IL allows similar to what jmeckel said about WI - except it's $25 for 5 years, does allow period plates.

Only problem I have is the restrictions on use with antique plate registration... only to and from antique auto events and shows or for maintenance test driving.

We registered ours for normal passenger plates - more money, but no hassle if we drive it to work once in a while, or the store or just out for a ride on a sunny Sunday.

A friend was driving his '64 Mustang with antique plates after he had done some electrical work - his lights went out and he pulled off the road. Cop behind him lit 'em up. A block from home and my friend explained the issue, cop still ticketed him for improper use. Had to go to court - judge was cool, he threw it out (and admonished the cop & state's atty) but my friend still had to mess with it.

I think some of the problem that "bogiediver" talks about comes from the 1960s & up cars when they can & will keep up with todays traffic, & are used as daily drivers while showing Historic etc tags.. See it all the time.

Boogiediver, Those are the reasons I run the standard truck plates on my A. $99 a year is getting high but being able to go where and when you want, worry free is worth it. I've got a copy of the statutes stating you can display YOM plates and just carry standard issue plate in the vehicle. so far I haven't been stopped, I checked with the local police chiefs and got their blessings because the statute is about doing that with historical plates. Maybe I'll see you cruisin the No IL backroads this summer. Clyde

My A cost me 30.00 here in Michigan and is good for however long I own the car, my 1929 Michigan plate is registered to the car and I do not need to carry a new plate with me. Pretty nice.

Clyde-

You may indeed see me... work in Fox Lake and take the scenic way home occasionally on the bike thru Solon Mills... will probably do the same with the 'A'...

I tried getting clarification from the Sec of State, but they never got back to me... I know if registered with antique plates, you can run period plates (carrying the antique registration papers and plates in the car) - are you saying IL allows period plates even when registered with normal passenger plates??

Been trying to get a matched pair of '31 IL plates - no luck yet. I do have a single '31 IL plate - had to have it even though I know it's not a car plate (it's a truck plate) - the number was too interesting to pass up - see first pic.

Of course, it may be a moot point if we get the plate we requested (second pic)... my wife probably won't let me run the period plates :D

Wisconsin has similiar restrictions, if you opt for antique plates.

"The vehicle can only be driven for special occasions such as display and parade purposes or for necessary testing, maintenance and storage purposes."

It's a shame Wisconsin won't allow unrestricted YOM registration like many other States & Provinces. There's a lot of nice Wis plates out there.

In NC, any automobile 35 years or older, can run YOM (year of manufacture) plates as long as the current NCDMV plate is carried in the automobile and current. This plate MUST be available for inspection by ANYONE no matter who it is that asks to see it. YOM plates require no registration or fees to be run but must be for the year the automobile is built.

Finally talked to the 'Specialized Plate Department' with the Sec of State for IL... YOM plates can only be displayed if the vehicle is registered with 'Antique Plates' and said antique plates and registration card are carried in the car.

I then asked if I displayed the current, regular, passenger plates could I also display the YOM plates as a decoration. Nope - only allowed to display one set of plates (of course, they allowed that I could swap once I get to a show as long as I put back the regular plates before getting back on the road - well, duh...).

So the matched pair of '31 plates I finally got will be relegated to hanging on the garage wall.

At least the regular plates we got were the ones I pictured earlier - 'AOOGA31'

Bogiedriver, Isn't that something, We could display them (YOM) if we cheapout and get Antique plates but if we spend the $99 per year for regular plates we can't use YOM plates. Well I'm still gonna run my YOM plates and fight em if I get stopped, Thanks for the update......Clyde

I can't get YOM Alaska plates, so I thought I'd just get YOM Texas (where I was born) plates and see what the Troopers say about that!
