Regarding Ignition Cable ID Plate

Hi,
Recently purchased a repo ignition cable ID plate. No rivets included.

Question is: For the banana shaped e28 cable housing, how to remove the old plate, which appears to be riveted to the iron part of the cable
and install the new one?

Also, had a thought (this is where I get dangerous) to lay the new plate over the old one with heavy duty glue and some fake rivet heads?

Anyone have any experience with the above, including the dangerous idea?

Thanks, as always

These plates are held in place by a small drive-in rivet, so you need some tool that will grab the head of the rivet and pull it out. Sometimes the serations on the rivet have a slight twist, so by turning the rivet CCW as you pull may help. Maybe something like a toe nail clipper would work, or a precision side or end cutter, if it's small enough. If the old plate is too far gone to save then you can pry it off first to give more grip area to the rivet head. I usually try to save the old plate.

I have removed those drive in rivits with the mig welder ---without damaging the plate they held down ---using a piece of copper with a small hole about the size of the head of the rivit ---in short pulses build up some weld letting it cool each pulse, when enough is built up to grab with vice grips use prybar--claw hammer, crowbar, flat bar to work the rivit out ---a slight counter clockwise turning hold on the vice grips helps "unscrew" them as you are prying ---I have also cut the weld off and re-formed the head of the rivit and reused it (chuck rivit in drill and use file)
