Reconditiohing NOS Hoses

Wow, maybe I can still use the 15-some gallons of ancient gasoline that's still in the tank of my barn-fresh '50 Studebaker truck...

Let's see, gotta find some cow manure, some ancient prophylactics, and....

When I first graduated I worked in a rubber research laboratory. From my experience you can not renew a NOS hose. It would be like trying to renew a tire with weathercracks. Basically they have lost their elastistity which means they dried out. They didn't lose their moisture in fact the oil part of the recipe has diminshed and you can not put the oil back in the hose or the tire. Can you still use it, of course because as said before there is no pressure in the hose. On a later model car with a pressure radiator cap it just would not hold up to the pressure.

As a matter of conscience I toss all the old hoses, belts, tires etc. I get at estate sales (I buy the whole lot usually) in the brush fire if they are more than a decade or so old. If they can't make them new so well no one can tell then obvious repros will have to do. I could resell some of that but if some misguided soul was running on 1955 tires and had a blowout and was killed I would consider myself personally liable. Tractor tires I will resell, if the seem usable, but will tell the buyer that they are old.

All aircraft parts of rubber have to be marked with a cure date and if they are not placed in service within a certain number of years the part has to be rebuilt or scrapped.

I'll pay you three times what it costs to ship to ship any and all Model A hoses and belts you find to me!

The NOS hoses, probably don't crack open, while running, is because, well, the engine is running and pumping hot water through them. They get softened up, while running.

As a followup, I tried the mixture of 1/2 glycerine and 1/2 dish soap and soaked one of the NOS hoses for 3 months. Result: Still rock hard. Whomever said that you can't put the oil back in old hoses is correct. The only way to use NOS hoses is to boil them in water and install quickly before they cool off. Removal would be the same. Run the engine hot , drain, and remove hose. Thanks for all the interest in this subject. I learned what I needed to know about using NOS hoses.
