Recommended Maintenance

Just bought a 30 M A PU. Runs desent and drives good, but I think some general maintenance has been overlooked these past few years. I plan on doing some basic maintenance...new points, plugs, change oil, ( whats the best type of oil? Should I do anything else as far as the oil change? ) Change transmission fluid, and just make sure all other fluid levels are good and just a general tightening up of all the nuts and bolts. Horn is not working right now, but the past owner says it never worked for him.So I will take it apart and see what's up with that. Just curious if there is a general check list I should go by in doing these maintenance updates? The water in radiator looks horrible, so Im thinking I will at least flush it out. This is my 3rd Model A. But its been about 15 years since I owned one. This forum is fantastic. So many folks so willing to help out newbies like myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wishing all a very Merry Christmas.

Maintenance schedule is found in the OWNER'S MANUAL. Basically just keep all moving parts oiled and grease, including the springs. Keep a little points lube on the distributor cam. I use antifreeze year round to keep the rust out and for freeze protection, as well as pump lubrication.

Shell Rotella 15-40 or such works great.

Check the dip stick when you add oil I think the manual calls for 5 qts that may put too much in and over fill it I usually use about 4 maybe a little more.

For those that may not know why only 4 quarts ...

This is because about a total of a quart, or a little less, of oil remains in the rod dipper "sub pan" and in the valve chamber after draining the oil.

Don't take your horn apart. Just remove the cove and attach a hot wire to it to see if it spins. Back off the adjustment so it can spin more freely, clean the commutator, oil the felts, and then see if it runs OK. If it does, then check your wiring circuit to see if the "not working" problem lies there. That is the most likely area.

Yellow wire to horn is hot wire.Try a jumper wire from other horn terminal to a good ground to see if horn works. If it does, then wire inside light switch rod may be broken or dirty contact under horn button or ground wire to center terminal on light switch may be broken.
