Recommended Head replacement on 1926 Model T engine

Just acquired 1926 Model T. It runs fairly well, but have noticed cracked head. I was thinking about replacement and noticed that some owners go with an aluminum head, which supposedly gives some additional horse power. Any thoughts or recommendation on this ?

I like the Z head. Just make sure that your timing advance is not so much that you get spark knock. The timing with a higher compression head does not need to be advanced as much.

Thanks for your reply. I think I read where I may have to get longer head bolts as well...not sure... Someone had added a distributor to this engine and it sounds like I would probably need less advance as I adjust it from the steering column spark lever... Tx again for your reply...just learning about this stuff...

Longer head bolts are not needed, generally speaking. If the head is aluminum, put washers under the head bolts.

I would be looking all around the block/freeze plug area as well. A cracked head is odd as that is a pretty thick piece of casting.

Stay away from aluminum, good clean original heads are available, currently finding a head gasket is another problem, the vendor supply is sporadic.

The proper head bolts are available, never re-use old head bolts and torque accordingly MTFCA website approx 50FT lbs.

Clean the threaded block holes well and you will probably have to clean up the carbon build up on the valve/pistons.
