Looking at my oil its' black as tar. What would be the recommended oil for this engine? I was thinking Delvac 20-40; would that be OK?

Not sure on the weight, but Driven and Lucas Hot Rod oils are great for infrequently driven cars because of their rust and corrosion inhibitors. They are a bit expensive, though.

Based on a recommendation by a well known Yblock engine builder, I use 10-40 Valvoline dino oil (no synthetic) in my 312's.. I can't see why it wouldn't be good for a flathead.

Automotive oils are so much better today than that were when these engines were originally built, that there are really no bad choices. Well, there is one : Don't get caught in the non-detergent trap.

Anymore, I've been using Walmart 10w-30 for the old cars. It's cheap, I think the last 5 gt. jug I bought was like $17-$18. I don't like the idea of synthetics in these old cars I don't think it is needed plus it will leak out of the seals more easily.

I only put maybe 200-250 miles per year on our old cars, and can't justify using Mobil 1 and other expensive motor oils.

Look it up, Walmart motor oils are refined by the Warren Oil Company and they have some good products. A mechanic told me years ago at that time it was made by Mobil that is why it is in a blue bottle.

Time will tell!
