recent acquired flathead motor ID.

I recently aquired a 24 stud flathead and would like to know the year of it. I was told it is a 1941 pick up truck motor. The only markins I found on the Heads are 16 and ford and on the rear bell housing top A81- 33 3. any idears

If there is a transmission attached there will be a serial number stamped on the little flat surface. It will start with a star, then 18-xxxxxx and another star. That will tell the date of mfg, pretty closely. The characters you give are misc. casting numbers and are really of no help.

There's no way I'd rely on the transmission to date the engine. I can bolt up a 32 transmission to a 53 block with no modifications.

If the OP posts pics it will probably be properly identified in two minutes.

I have the trans that was supposed to be original to it..no. reads 18 4669548,I will try to get photos soon
YOU may want to double check that number, you have one too many digit. Either the "4" is not supposed to be there or one too many "6"'s maybe??? Look a VanPelt sales, he list a "general" year and number range of the transmission numbers!!! Either way, neither correspond to 1941 and STILL the engine or the trans OR both were replaced somewhere along the suspect vehicles life......who knows.....Again, pictures are worth 1000 posts and conjectures to definitively answer your OP question.

Bob ....You sure? "☆18-4669548☆" lines right up with '39 Ford range of numbers. What am I missing here? Coop

You are right, somehow I was seeing one more number than should be!! My bad - I was somehow reading 46 million. I do have a new prescription but haven't had the time to go get fitted for the new glasses....Honestly!!!! Lol

You will have to go by characteristics on the block to ID the year range of manufacture. A 1941 221 block will still have a pencil wide ledge just above the timing gear cover. The intake manifold deck surface will appear to be raised a little above the rest of the block surrounding it. There will be NO bulges near the edges of the oil pan rails on each side of the lower block. With the cylinder head removed from either side, the center most coolant port on the deck is keystone shaped.

The 239 block in 1941 will be similar to the 221 but will have no ledge above the timing cover. The center deck port will be round on the 239 blocks.
