Rebuilt waterpump self destruct...Argggg

Did you fix your speedo? get onto it because it sounds like the cable is about to go.

I pulled the cable the day I discovered the thrown water pump pulley (cable was still good but dry. I got two recommendations on the cable....graphite and lithium grease. Today I purchased a spray bottle of lithium grease and have the cable in a baggie soaking in that. I'll spray the hole of the sheath good before I shove it back in. I need to take the speedo out to put the needle back on and I'll do the best I can to check if the guts of the speedo were what was screaming.

Yesterday I checked the other water pump and it was fine, removed the bad one and while I was at it took the helmet off. Both were sent off today and should be there on Friday. I avoided naming names in this thread in the beginning but Skip has been a true professional in this matter and is standing behind his work. I think my pump is a fluke and I'm guessing he's as curious as I am as to what happened. Was planning on sending the helmet in for a check this fall after the driving season but with this down time, now is the perfect time. Full faith in Skips work!

I came home after work and measured the belt. It's about 5/8" with a tape measure and fits the pulley's at the top of the flanges. The diameter fits too. This is the belt that was sent up with the car...maybe it'll help others that wonder what belt to use. I don't mind buying a new belt but this one seems right.

Just to close out this issue. Skip called yesterday to discuss what he found with the water pump and the helmet I sent him. He was at a loss as to what happened with the pulley and has never had that happen before. He pressed on a new pulley and I should be good to go. As far as the distributor goes, I cleaned it up and put new points etc. in it a couple years ago. Feeler gauge on the points and I believe I set timing two lines up. I was curious how well I did (the car seemed to run fine) so I asked Skip if he would mind putting it on the machine before he did anything with it and let me know. I had the vacuum brake too tight, I had the points "a bit tight" and the timing was at 2*. I'm looking forward to getting my parts back tomorrow and seeing how she runs. Thanks Skip!

I don't know the history of these pumps but the rebuilder said that the new shafts are machined to exactly .5" and the pulley is reamed to .497 which is a .003 press fit. It shouldn't have come off and when they get it back I'm sure there'll be some measuring going on.

I was talking to Skip this morning and I asked him if he ever got your
pump back. He said he did and fixed it but the problem was not with
the pulley coming loose on the shaft. It was a tin pulley with a hub
that presses on the shaft. It wasn't loose on the shaft. It was the tin
pulley came loose from hub part of the pulley. Anyway he fixed it, I
don't know if he fixed your pulley or replaced it. It wasn't a falt of his
rebuild, he didn't know what happened. It's on it's way or you already
received it and I doubt if he charged you?? G.M.
