Rebuilt waterpump self destruct...Argggg

I'd enjoy working on mine if I had a garage that a car would fit in...I miss my Fairbanks shop!!
I got the water pump and helmet off, boxed up and ready to mail back to the rebuilder tomorrow. I was surprised to see the impellers of the pump (which were new last year) had some built up stuff on them. Not sure what it was...would have taken a minor amount of effort to get it off but left it on so the rebuilder can see it. It by no means seized the pump but was notable for how few miles are on the pump. I'm running antifreeze. After I got the pump off, I tried putting the pulley back on...should be a press fit but it slid half way on without any effort. I checked the other pump and the shaft it flush with the pulley and doesn't look like it has moved. Rebuilt carb, pumps, rear end, engine, coil, and helmet...what else can go wrong...forget I asked LOL.

Capt Kirk, going back to your pictures in post #1, I'm wondering what type of fan belt you are using? The printed info goes out of focus when I enlarge the picture. It may just be the pictures, but that belt looks very wide, and based on the paint wear pattern on the pulley, it looks like the belt has been riding towards the top of the V groove. Could you post a picture that shows how the belt looks when it's actually riding in the pulley groove? Not saying that would have caused the problem, but the belt width just doesn't look correct.

John,
The belt is the belt that came with the car when my dad sent it up. I just went out to check to answer your question. It's a Gates Green Stripe #628...not sure if it's the right one but the diameter is right and it's not bottoming out. If this isn't the right belt, I'd be interested in knowing the number of the belt I need.

I Googled Gates #628 fan belt and based on what came up it said that is a micro v belt. Based on the cross section shown by Gates for that part number belt, it is not the correct V belt configuration for an early Ford V8.

These cars are old and set a lot. Problems are going to continue to occur until everything that can go wrong is fixed. Just the way it is.

Yep eventually you get to the stage where everything is great . Currently I have the Sandoz Mirror clock that has stopped, A rattle in the Dash, Some rust staining that has come through on the windshield heater upholstery, the hydrostatic fuel gauge that is a little inaccurate and the after market tandem windscreen wiper kit that is working less than satisfactory -Always some thing to work on ! Karl

It's certainly not a "micro" belt. I found a picture with it installed...it has always seemed like a right fit to me.

Someone once told me there would be one hour of maintence for every hour of driving and old car, most of the components are rebuildable instead of throw away.

It should be 1 to 10,I hate how the computer changes what you are trying to say, it thinks it knows better than you. I went back three times just to make this sentence the way I wanted.

Some pics of '35-'36 engines that I was comparing your fan belt fit to.....could be just my imagination.

628 is an old number, the new number is TR24538 53 5/8" long
3/4" wide.

I'm not sure if a B series width belt is exactly correct for a flathead, but I have been using them since I started messing with these things.

Somewhere between a B49 and B53 will fit ok.

A 3/4" wide belt is too wide.

Your Dad probably didn't have the internet at his disposal when he found that one.

Excellent Mart. Thanks!

It's too bad the the manufacturers have changed the V-belt numbering systems. Most went metric. You used to be able to tell what size is was by the number. Too many other factors these days plus V-belts aren't as popular as they used to be.

I will get a new belt on the way...Mart gave a range of numbers (B49 to B53), is there a specific number I should get?

If your existing belt sort of fits, put a mark on it and take a tape measure and measure the length. Deduct 3" from the length. That is the number you want. In other words if the length of the belt is 55", order a B52. As your belt is a bit wide I'd round down to the next size below.

Here is a link to the belts available from Rockauto.

http://www.rockauto.com/en/tools/be...t,+++++++++++21/32"+++++(16.7mm)+belt,1000582

Once you determine which size fits your car you can get a replacement at any time from any industrial supply place.

Mart.

If you can buy local most parts stores will let you exchange the belt if you don't get the right size the first time.

I don't have a NAPA nearby (I miss that about being here)...Autozone, Orielies and Advance auto. We do have a local parts store (Mazza) down the road which has a more traditional parts supply for older cars...and they have a popcorn machine by the door!!
I will see what they have as far as belts.
