Rebuilt Transmission Knocks ... Help

I would think you could go through the starter hole(starter removed) with
a pry bar. Maybe a dial indicator through the clutch inspection hole.

Would you be able to see movement at the crank pulley when depressing the clutch pressure plate fingers?

Bill, it was the same shift tower as used before,ie not changed.
it was the new 1st- rev sliding gear had different dimensions to the original ford gear.

Lawrie makes a good point on #13......

" I found the problem by running the engine ,and without using the clutch gently pushed the gear lever towards rev gear,it only moved about 1/8 at the knob before trying to get rev, where as to try for 1st gear it was 2ins."

Have you tried this yet?

Put it up on jack stands and started it up. Same knock as I had in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The knock was twice as loud if not more when I shifted into reverse.
How do you check the crank thrust with engine installed?
Thanks
Have a friend sit in the car while you use a board to pry the front pulley to the rear gently. Let off the pulley and have the friend depress the clutch pedal while you watch the pulley. It should not move perceptibly. A knock like you describe will probably allow the pulley/crank to move visually. Be sure when you pry the pulley to the back you are gentle.

After yesterdays listening feeling and anything else I could think of to try and locate the knock I dropped the rear end and pulled the transmission today.
I fired up the engine and nothing but smooth running, no knock.
With the transmission out I spun the main shaft (u joint end) with my rachet while holding the gears in reverse and had the same knock. I could hear and feel the knock every half revolution consitently in the same place 180 degrees apart. I could not see any odd movement at each knock as the gears turned.
The knock is in all gears but is most audible and felt in reverse.
Sure would like to figure out which component is at fault as the gears can be expensive.

If you do put new gears in ,pay particular attention to the clearance between the 1st -rev mainshaft sliding gear and the rev idler.
