Picked up a 40-41 complete motor. Dirty on the out side, water pumps frozen, All ports taped and sealed, was in storage for some time. I figured I'll have to rebuild so started removing parts. After the heads were removed the cylinders look good, crank turned no problem. Pistons and valves have a crust of carbon, other wise look ok. Plulled the oil pan, everything seams fine, nothing loose no metalic in the oil. I'm thinking clean her up reassemble and fire it up. There is alot of gunk in the lifter valley area any sugestions for cleaning this area?? Looks like the last one to mess with it installed new water pumps, made gaskets without punching the hole to allow oil to bushings. Hence frozen pumps. So point me in the right direction. Thanks Ford Barners!

I took my motor apart and cleaned it and put I back togeter and still had no compression, don't know why but ended up rebuilding it. The machine shop told me that I had 4 hair line cracks on 4 cylinders.

I cleaned out a relatively dirty 59ab engine in frame by using a small electric pump and solvent. Pulled the pan and intake and used a brush, work from top to bottom... worked real well. The engine was much like yours, I didn't know the history. It runs clean, good oil pressure.

Why was it stored, and pulled out of the vehicle in the first place.

This is a good point. If it were me, I would try to run it but would assume it wouldnt run. Then I would tear it completely apart and get the block fluxed. From there you should be able to determine the problem.
