Rebuild 1940 shocks?

Hi everyone; perhaps this question will also aid others besides myself, who've found themselves in this position: is there a book, (or source) for how to rebuild knee action shocks on a 40 Ford? Also, what fluid is used in them, & what numbers do the 40 shocks have on them to identify them as truly being 1940? I have a "pair" with different arm lengths, & different numbers on the arms. Every pair I've seen has mismatched arm numbers. Is this "normal"? Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can provide! John

John, you should contact Bill Wzorek who posts here. Click on his avatar picture of a shock or his name and send him a pm or an email. I'm sure he can answer your questions and help you get those '40 shocks rebuilt.

John, like JM suggests you should contact Bill Wzorek. Bill rebuilt the rear shocks on our '39 LZ and they made a tremendous improvement in the overall handling and ride.

Others have told you correctly... Bill is THE guy to do your shocks.
As far as concourse correct shocks for your car:
Front shocks: The arms had cast on them “F‑837”, Ford script, and, on a boss near the end, the number 10. The bodies were approximately 2 7/8" in diameter.
Rear shocks: The arms had cast on them “F‑745” and the Ford script.
The bodies were approximately 2 7/8" in diameter.

You replied to a very old post. I believe the gentleman referred to has passed. I believe the best current rebuilder is "Andy's Shox". I am not an expert, but have heard that "Apple Hydraulics" that advertises a lot, may not be the best, and should be carefully checked out.

You heard correctly. Apple does total CRAP work. I think they get new business now and then but zero repeat business.

Yep! I had quite a few done by Andy. He was prompt, fair in his pricing and quite the craftsman.
