Is any one else having problems with the replacement rear window rubber on
1955 Ford Hard tops? Even without the chrome installed the rubber alone does not fit. It seems only Dennis Carpenter makes this rubber. Any input would be appreciated....Thanks

I wonder if you ordered the wrong part number. Some of these catalogs are layed out such that it is confusing as to which part # goes with which description.
Concours has the '55 hardtop rear window gasket for $72.50, part # B5A7042084-D.
In 1955, the rear window glass was exactly the same on the 2dr hardtop, 2 and 4dr sedans. The only one that was different was the glass for the Crown Vic.
In 1956, Fomoco used the Crown Vic body for the Victoria 2-dr hardtop and Customline 2-dr hardtop, so the glass for the Crown vic was the same for the Victoria. Also, in '56, the glass for the 2 & 4-dr sedans was the same as the 4-dr hardtop.
ECklers (Mac's antique auto parts) also sells it (same part # mentioned above) for $78 and some change.
I don't know how well they fit.

B5A-7042084-D is the # I ordered from Concours. The second one the glass shop ordered from Dearborn which is now Eklers or Macs. The first one was really bad. As I said earlier the channel the glass goes in is almost 3/4 wide. The sides and the bottom are correct at about 1/4 wide. Has any one seen a glass nearly 3 times thicker at the top than the sides or bottom. The 2nd one is a little better but still not right. The top piece is vulcanized to the sides at the corners and it is almost like it is the wrong top portion. I may try Steele Rubber on Monday and see if they make their own rubber. I see the price is considerable higher. It seems Carpenter makes this Rubber for all the other Vendors.

My 4-dr Sedan uses that same gasket and I got mine from Dennis Carpenter in 1992. It fit well at the top and sides, but all along the bottom the gasket sticks out too much, so the bottom of the stainless trim strip is actually resting on the rear deck strip forward of the trunk lid. Yes it is pushed in all the way as far as it can go. Years later the trim strip rubbed thru the paint on that rear deck strip and started a rust spot which has been patch-painted over many times thru the years. What ya gonna do?

Carpenter makes that particular rubber for everybody. Even for Steele rubber. It was a fight but the glass is finally in. I mentioned to the glass man about the problem with the bottom stainless rubbing the deck and he stated he also has seen that problem in the past.

If Steele sells a Carpenter seal he sure makes a handsome profit on it. I'm glad you got the glass in.

I confirmed with Steele. It is a Dennis Carpenter rubber. They sell for about $80.00 everywhere and Steele sells for $135.00. That's close to 70% profit . Imagine what wholesale is too.
