I'm looking for ideas on what to use for my '54 Ford. I have an old one that I can use as a pattern and I have the fabric to cover it with. What I don't have is a material that is flexible enough for the curvature and is durable.
Why not just buy a new reproduction package tray? They are available. I am not a big fan of Mac's, but their catalog lists them for around 30.00. - F F
I used 1/4" particle/pressed board in my wife's 70' Cougar. It is stiff enough, but flexible enough that it will bend, to get it in, and yet strong enough to gut to put speakers in it, if you want. Since you are covering it, no one will know what it is made of.

I used a piece of 1/8" masonite, the same stuff I used to make all the interior door panels. Get it at any hardware store or lumber yard.
It is basically like some type of press-board. you can cut it with a jigsaw and punch holes with a good hollow punch set. Perfect!
the experience i'll had with 1/8" masonite is if not "tempered" masonite, glue tends to absorb into the surface which makes it hard to make any material adhere. I always use 3M super 77 spray glue.
