Rear Window Curtain to Roller Attachment

I have an original rear curtain roller assembly but of course the actual shade material is long gone.

How does one attach new fabric to the metal roller? Contact cement?

Thanks - Hunter

Contact cement will probably work. You could also try a strip of tape. Once it rolls around a couple of times it will be locked on the roller.

If you look close at the slot at each end of the tube, you will see where it's crimped closed. Take a narrow straight blade screwdriver and gently pry the crimp open at both ends. Once open you can slide the old fabric out the end. If you look at the fabric you will see a stiff string with the fabric folded over it. This is what holds the fabric to the tube. I cut a 1/16" length of piano wire, folded the fabric over it and used contact cement to glue the fabric to itself, creating a hem with the wire in it. I then slid the "hem" back into the tube slot from one end and tacked it with super glue. You can open the slot with a wide blade screwdriver if your fabric is thick. Be gentle. This is how I did mine. Hope this helps.

Thank you Glenn and Mao.

Are the shades sold by LB constructed using a material that replicates the original? I have never seen an original one so I have no idea. The one that LB sells uses kind of a sheer thin material and is chocolate brown in color. According to the JS a brown one is called for in my 29 coupe.

Thank you ...

These are the only pics I had handy. This is from a '28 Tudor but would be the same except color. The "spool" type roller was used on most '28-29 models other than the Town Sedans. They do not have the channel to attach the fabric like the later rollers. These had an extra scrap or strip of fabric sewn across the top of the shade. This allowed for fabric to be glued to the tube in both directions from the stitch line shown so the shade could not be pulled loose (unwound) from the roller.

ALL standard models used a tab as SHOULD be outlined in the Standards.

Howdy CarlG. It's not a short length of wire. It runs the entire length of the tube, same as the fabric width. Sorry for the 1/16" length. Should have said length of 1/16".
