Rear wheel seal

I installed a rear wheel seal in my 1930 coupe and it went to far and is touching the bearing housing. The bearing turns fine but the cage does not.Do I need to redo the seal.

That would be YES (re-do) since the seal will likely get torn up by the cage.

You can CAREFULLY pry the seal from the hub with a large screwdriver and "prying" working one side and then the other.

In your removal you may "bend" the seal slightly but probably won't affect the actual flex edge. When you reinstall it, use a bit of a sealant (Permatex No. 2) around the perimeter of the seal. (The seals themselves typically have a narrow "band" of soft coating intended as seal which in your installation/removal you have probably upset - the P2 will replace this.)

Place some thin cardboard on a cement floor and drop the hub flat on the cardboard a few times and the bearing will push the seal outwards. You may need to drop the hub with a bit of a push to get it to move.

This works, I’ve also done it.

So basically you kneel on the floor and hold the drum/hub assembly about waist high and drop it so it lands flat on the cardboard. The weight of the bearing coupled with the inertia from the fall will push it against the backside of the seal that is in to far pushing it outwards.
This technique is often used to remove the bearings completely.

That worked perfectly on the second drop.Sure saved me time and another seal.

I wonder who was the first person to do this ? Maybe they were so mad that they picked up the hub and slammed it down ! Then looked and said whoopee :-) is good to go !
