Rear Wheel Grease Seal 78-1175

Okay, which way do these seals go into the drum?

One side has a gap between the rubber and the metal part of the seal and the other does not.

Also, the metal on that side is flat and the other side has a crown.

My guess is that the flat side goes up to match the flat snap ring that fits on it??? But, I could be wrong.

Which side goes where?

I was taught that the lip on the seal always goes toward the fluid. ??? Hope this helps.

If you carefully examine the seal you will see that there is an open edge and a closed rubber edge. The closed rubber edge is bonded to the steel and tapers toward the center of the seal. The seal is installed with the open edge side to the wheel bearing and the closed bonded edge pointing to the inside of the vehicle.
