Rear spring crack

I am cleaning up the rear spring on a customers car. Two of the leafs are cracked at what looks to be the butt joint where they joined the strips of metal together. The cracks are straight across the the leaf only going part way. This is a replacement spring. I have looked at the other leafs for this spring and see no other problems. At this point I am going to swap out the leafs but was wondering about the opionions on welding. The cracks are both about 4 to 5 inches from the end on the 6th and 7th leaf. Would my thinking be too far off that this would create a hard spot that would be more prone to re-cracking?

Welding a spring will destroy the heat treating and make the spring very soft in that area. Gar Williams

Replace the reproduction spring with an original. Why chance another leaf breaking?

it is a spring , welding will remove the spring in it & it will break next to the weld .. steve

If someone local doesn't have the leafs you need, then you might try Bert's in Denver.

I cut the end 6" off and welded it to the remaining end of the leaf springs on my utility trailer. It gave me more load capacity and has been no problem in 10 years. I should have cut a foot off because I've loaded the trailer a few times so the axle is bottomed on the frame. The leaf springs were from the rear of a jeep as I recall.
