rear hub seal

Try to find something with a right angle foot on it to slip under the edge of the seal, between the bearing and the seal and drive it out like you are using a punch on it. Maybe a 10 inch piece of angle iron? Whatever you do you will not save the seal.

There have been a few posts over the last several months. One of the posters from Canada sent me a picture of a "Cats Claw" - carpenters know what they are. He uses a cut off axle shaft inside the hub to give the claw a fulcrum to pry the seal out.

Thanks for the hints. I have new seals, snap rings, etc. Just didn't want to damage the hubs. Cats Claw sounds like a good approach.

If the hub is attached to the drum just drop it squarely (hard) on a piece of plywood, seal side down, and the bearing will knock it out, kinda like removing the tray in the oil pan.

Displayed (I hope) are two photos I picked off of fordbarn some time ago, that someone posted. it looks to me to be an excellent way to remove the seal. I have not made the tool yet, but will do so next time I have to remove some seals.

The tool is made from a discarded rear axle.

The new seals on the market that most suppliers carry are too big and you will have difficulty installing them unless you reduce the outside diameter in some fashion. The seal is apparently for some other application. The only supplier I know that carries a seal that fits correctly is A&L.
