Rear hub removal

Ive got a differential that a fellow needs the perches from. I have the four bolts out and am ready to cut the axle tubes, BUT, the hubs and backing plates need to come off. Whats the EASIEST way to do this? Im a "T" guy and never worked on an "A". Id like to save the hubs and axles if possible. Anybody need them? ws

You will need a hub puller to get the hub off and then the axle housing just bolts to the differential. Unbolt that, slide the housing off and then take apart the pumpkin, the axles will then come out. At least that is how my disassembled axle goes together. Others will chime in I am sure for more details.

Thanks Mike! Thats kinda what I thought... just like a "T". The T hubs need a special puller to get the hub off the taper. Are these on a taper as well or a spline ? If it were summer time I could deal with it much better but a block off of northern Lake Michigan right now makes it a chore! ws

The hub and axle are on a taper with a key.. There are 3 different style hubs if I remember correctly,, however,, I don't remember ever seeing a hub like yours unless I'm missing something from the picture.. The 'A' vendors have the different pullers..

"And so the end is near, and now I face the final curtain..."

I had a pretty substantial puller on both sides today (Blue Point) and made the hub centers pretty darn warm with the torch. Shes' say no go !!
So tomorrow, out comes the gas ax, and Ill cut the tubes and the axle. Speak now or forever hold yer piece! The hubs, housing center, backing plates and carrier will go cheap or go to the pound! Maybe Ill make some jack stands outa the old tubes! ws

If your going to cut it up I would put the puller on and just heat the hubs till they popped off.

I'd recommend doing it the right way instead of the easy way. Bob C's suggestion sounds like the right way.

on hubs that are really stuck you need the heavy duty 3 arm puller,it weighs about 20 pounds, put it on tighten lug nuts tight, turn the shaft down to the axle, get a 3 or 4 pound hammer and beat the cross bar till it wont turn any more, heat hub if you want, stand to one side when working with the puller some times when the hub releases every thing will fly backwards, dont be in its way, use eye protection, pieces of metal can fly off the cross bar, after you have gotten the cross bar as tight as you can, walk away for an hour or so, come back and beat on the crossbar somme more, it might take several times doing that but it will come lose, leave the puller on over nite, it might pop off , if not just keep tightening the cross bar on the puller till the hub pops off, any one can gorilla some thing off, it takes a good mechanic to do a job right, anyone can drive a car, but only the good guys can build one

One trick is to also put a nail or pin or something in the little hole drilled in the axel for the cotter pin... Sometimes you really need to put a lot of pressure on the axel with the puller and I've seen an axel or two with those little holes collapsed under the pressure.

Those are all very valid points guys! Also well taken. If I had time I sure would dis-assemble the unit properly, but I couldnt get an offer on the whole complete piece and dont have the room to store it.
Ideally, youd put the nut back on the stub a few turns. Im outa time on this one as my wife is heading for texas for 6 months tomorrow and its dang cold a block off of lake michigan! Ill take the cut off hubs up to the motor parts store and have them press the remnants out. ws

August 2012 havin' fun!

This is #10 Model T for me. A 1926 underslung (dropped 6") speedster. The "POLLINATOR SPECIAL". Rebuilt from the 12 volt sealed beams to the rear end thrust washers. Gonna finish it this winter. Stay tuned!

Agree totally. And how can those rear perches be used now anyway? Should the other guy cut his tubes and axles off and weld on your ends?

Rear perches can be easily brought back to spec simply by inserting a carbon rod or porcelain rod of the appropriate size into the worn perch hole and mig welding all around it to fill in new metal. That welding can then be ground to correct contour, and the carbon or porcelain rod removed or broken out, resulting in a craftsman-like repair.

I am sure you would not be in favor of someone butchering up a Model T this way since those are what you prefer.

The guy is trying to get a later V8 rear end to fit into his Model A. Seriously, I had the WHOLE differential posted here for $50 and not a call on it! Thats what I have into it. This guy bought the perches, and Ill have the center housing and the ring gear and carrier to sell. Ill make some tall jack stands out of the tubes.
Believe you me, I dont waste anything! Ill have a pair of 1-1/4" chrome vanadium bars for stock for a project too. Now that they are shippable, who wants the diff parts???
In the meantime, I think I can find enough to keepbusy with my boat. Its a 1963 ALUMINUM Chris Craft Roamer that Ive had since 1973. Its hull #6 and without reservation, I can honestly say theres 200K into it PLUS my labor. Irplace a chunk of bad wood, I use it for a pattern, THEN it goes on the table saw, gets trimmed and goes to the recyle pile. Ive got a 25 X 38 foot shop that I can hardly turn around in. ws

YUP... so this morning I just grabbed the housing to set it up on some horses to work on it later and the darn thing reached out and shot a blob of black 600W mixed with some old grease for good measure all over the front of some NEW Levi's. Ill laugh all the way to Farm n Fleet. Actually they are soaking with GUNK from the inside out in the sink as we speak.
Put those GD hubs in the vise and a single smack with a 4 pounder on one and 3-4 on the other and the cut off stubs shot down to the floor. Sure wouldnt've come out that easy the other day now, would it??? So now, who needs 2 hubs with bearings, backing plates and a center housing with a carrier and bearings with a near perfect gear... C'MON !!! STEP UP!!! Itll be headed to the steel guy next week. ws

You should see what I do to MOPARS!

Wheres BashawT from?? Lets see now... I need friends and you need hubs for $10 or the carrier and gear for $15 right pal??? How about 4 fenders for a 1925 T coupe for $100... OOh OOh!! Have 4 like new 4:50 X 21 NON VIETNAMIZE tires with tubes and those are NEGOTIABLE! ws
