rear hub questions

I have a early 28 tudor sedan that I am working on. When I pulled the rear hubs the one on the right had a lot of grease in the brake area outside of the hub. No grease got on the shoes. My question is, What is wrong in there to let this grease get that far and how in the hell do you get the seal out of the hub? I have taken out the snap ring but can't get the seal out . I don't want to hurt the bearing or anything . thanks for any help

You have to pry the seal out, which will destroy it. Some people have suggested dropping the drum down on a hard surface, but I wouldn't want to do that to my drums.

I only hand pack the rear bearings and don't use the axle zerks. This way the grease should stay in place.

On the seals that are in there now, I can see the spring that is on the inside of it. Does that mean they are shot and should be replaced?

Also, is it the seal that keeps the grease in or is it the baffle? How often do you hand grease the rear bearings?

If you see the spring it means someone must have installed the seal backwards.

The seal should keep the grease in, and the tin baffle should keep the grease off the brake linings.

I think if you repack the bearings every 10 years or 20,000 miles you'll be OK, which ever comes first. I use Mystik JT-6 High Temp. It's a very sticky grease and should stay in place and work well.

Tom, Thanks so much for your response. I will get new seals and snap rings, pack the bearings by hand and reassemble. thank you
