my first time working on a stock rear hub. [ 1940 ] what is the proper tool to remove the seal so i can inspect the bearing [ without destroying it! ] thanks!

Chances of removing the seal intact for re-use are pretty much a no chance deal. invest in new seals and fewer problems down the road.

Take photos and Just pry it out. They are not reusable. Easy and cheap to install new seals. I apply a drop of oil to the edge of the seal to reduce install friction. Be sure to install the seal facing the right direction. I am not sure these photos are correct re: direction. Be sure to regrind the bevel on the snap ring so you can use snap ring pliers next time. Be careful replacing the bearings as the reproduction bearings are low quality and don't last. Your better off using the Ford bearings even if it's used.

I took a length of steel bar about 3/4 by 3/16 by about 10" long, and bent the end at a sharp 90 degrees. I sharpened the end so it just fitted behind the bearing, right where it meets the hub. (Not between the seal and the bearing). By gently prying with the improvised tool I was able to push the seal out by using the bearing as a pusher.

No damage to the seal or bearing if done with care.

Mart.
