Rear breaks howl/growl only in reverse

It has been doing this forever and I've just lived with it. When I'm backing out, the minute I step on the brake pedal (even lightly) the rear brakes give a loud growl. You know the cartoon dog Scooby Do when he goes "Huuh?" - that's a good description of the sound.

Other than that, the brakes work pretty good I'd say.
Is this a matter of typical drum brakes or are they out of round maybe?

Thanks All,
Alan

btw in reference to my stuck valve thread, the engine is running great - thanks for the suggestions. I'm noticing the rear main in leaking a bit. Engine is getting old but not bad for a 30 year old rebuild. I restored her in the 80's and a gentleman in Baton Rouge, LA named Lupe did the short block/babbits for me. Anybody here ever heard of him?

I think a squeal or growl is nothing to worry about. When the drums are removed spray with Brake clean and inspect. How often have you adjusted the bearing clearances?

If the brake drum was out of round it tends to pulse, at least mine did. Yours sounds like a high frequency shudder which will likely be no real problem.

I suspect work tracks causing an alignment issue, -or to 'hard' of a lining. Many shoes have had the edges chamfered to stop the squeal/chatter. Just remember you cannot have a worn system perform like it is supposed to.

agree edges of linings prolly not chamfered and will grab/release and chatter/growl.
they should always be chamfered.
an A is supposed to leak at rear main
