Rear brake removal

Kinda hit a wall. Got the emergency brake shoes off but according to Andrews, once the 4 hex nuts are removed from the backing plate, it should just come off and then you can work on the brakes on your bench. Problem is the brake and emergency brake actuator arms attached to the rods. So, I detached the rods from the arms. But, the arms are through the metal arm that attached to the backing plate. What am I doing wrong to get this off?

You need to remove the emergency brake actuator arm and the woodruff key that is in the shaft. This will allow you to pull the emergency brake carrier off. Push the service brake lever forward and worry it out from between the two braces on the radius rod as you remove the backing plate.

Keep every thing separate, left and right, by marking them or putting them in a plastic bag so marked. This will save you a lot of frustration when you put things back together.

To save a lot of frustration, undo the one bolt and remove the radius rods from the rear end. This will not only make removal easier, but will make the installation a lot easier, as you can then fully assemble the unit, with actuator arms and springs, on the bench!

Removed all 4. Totally removed the rear, backing plates and all. Just took the shoes off the front. Put new pads on the shoes and put it back all together. Brakes on the model a are officially on my frustration list. I think the first sentence in the Les Andrews book needs to be, "before attempting a brake job, have another person to help."
