Rear brake grommet

There is a hole in the back of the brake shoe housing on my 31 A. You can easily see it kneeling down looking between the brake shoes and the housing that the shoes are attached to. This is a factory hole. Is it ok to find a grommet at block that hole off. I see no reason in it being open and letting water or dirt in.

Could you post a picture of this please? Stock Model A brake housing (backing) plates generally only have one hole through them, --and that is for the adjuster to thread into.

.

I don't know how to put a picture up. If you are looking at the back rt. wheel the hole is slightly to the front and you can see the radius arm thru it . The adjuster you are feferring to is at the rear isn't it?

You are not looking through the emergency brake carrier hole are you? The only other thing I can think of what you are seeing is there are 6 holes around the mounting area on a backing plate, and four of them attach the plate to the rear end housing but the upper & lower area covers those. I honestly cannot think of what you have, may need to go look at a few plates to see if I see something.

Robert: I just looked at a set of backing plates on the chassis of my '30 Wagon and don't understand what it could be that you are seeing. To answer the question, I would agree that the hole should be filled. Gar Williams

No I do not have 2 brake rods going to the brake housing. I think now that it is proably got something to do with the emerg. brake because mine doesn't have them. My car since I've owned it has not had the 2 sets of brake shoes on the rear. The hole I'm seeing must be for the actuator arm of the emerg. brake shoes. I am going to try and find a couple of grommets to fit the both sides and stop this hope up. What do you think?

I think I'd look for the parking brake parts and make your car whole, and not plug the hole.

I might do that Tom but will have to look in a catalog and look to even know what to shop for. Like I said they weren't on the car when I bought it.

Do you have a paper catalog, or Les's maintenance manual so you can see a exploded view of what is needed?

Do you have a lever in the car for the brakes?
