Rear Axle Shims

I have some play on my back drivers side tire. Was looking at getting some shims. Do they just slide over the axle and that's it? Thanks!

Well, what do you mean by play and where is the play ?? If you mean that when you jack that wheel off the ground and try to turn/spin it and it has some free-play,, then I think the wheel and maybe even the drum need to be removed and looked to see just where that play is.. If it turns out to be in the axle itself then some play is normal.. If its between the hub/drum and the axle then maybe the hub just needs correct tightening, the axle and/or hub replaced, or an axle/hub shim may work..

If you can rock the rear backing plates back and forth it means they are not tight up against the flange on the end of the axle housing. Often it is because the nuts have bottomed out on the ends of the threads on the mounting bolts and no amount of tightening will secure the backing plate properly. If that is the case you need to put spacers between the E-brake carrier and the grease baffle. If left unattended it will cause the mounting holes in the backing plates to become elongated and then it will not be possible to secure them. They will rock back and forth with each acceleration and braking.
