Years ago I picked up some spare rear axels "just in case." The axels have 18 straught cut teeth on them. Are they compatible with my 378 rear or have I been storing these greasy things for 20 years for nothing? Cleaning house,....Thanks......Duff...

If you're talking the 35-41 axles, there are two different ones-with respect to the tooth count... Used with the appropriate (insert correct name for the two other little gears) they are interchangable... Karl

It depends on which year banjo rear you want to use them in and which spider gears are used in the carrier housing.

Never throw any early Ford V8 parts away :)

18 tooth axles were used from 35 through somewhere in 38/39 (48-4235) and the 16 tooth axles with the same length were used from late 38/E-39 thru 41 (81A-4235). As was mentioned the early types use 12 tooth spider gears and later all use 11 tooth spider gears.

Duff, Rotorwrench nailed it. The two sets are compatible in sets, of course, not individually.

Inspect the inside terminus of the keyway for cracks. If a crack is found at this location, your axle is a wall hanger.
