The week after next I will be attending a boring, mandatory conference for three days. I expect to have a lot of down time (especially if I skip some of the sessions).

Can anyone recommend some good books of Henry Ford, his motor company or the Model A automobile?

Thanks

Pete' I just read "Fordlandia" it was pretty interesting. It's about Fords rubber plantation, but lots of other related insights into Ford during the thirties. Frank

I second:

The Ledgendary Model A Ford by Peter Winnewisser.

A really good insight into the car, how it was driven and what the Ford dealers had to do to sell the cars.

The service letters reprint is also interesting.

Beyond the usual good books covering the Model A, I like the "ROUGE", Pictured in it's Prime, covering the years 1917-1940.

Of course, THE FORD MODEL A "As Henry Built It", George DeAngelis, is a favorite.

One of my favorite non-Ford books is "HORATIO'S DRIVE", America's First Road Trip, Ken Burns, also DVD movie version.

If you're in the holiday spirit, there's always, The Night Henry Ford Met Santa". :D

I would second the DeAngelis('As Henry Built It') recommendation, along with 'Model A Miseries and Cures' by Mary Moline. The pics in DeAngelis are worth the money alone.

When you run out of the normal books about the Model A, to learn more about Henry as an individual, I recommend The People's Tycoon, Henry Ford and the American Century by Steven Watts, ISBN 0-375-70725-5.

Hi Peter
Unless you are looking for restoring “How To” books, then

‘The Ford Model A’ “As Henry Built It” is an excellent
pictorial and fact book. I don’t have the ISBN, but it has
Library of Congress Catalog No. 72-28017

The same applies to . . .
‘Henry’s Lady’ “An Illustrated History of the Model A Ford”
Library of Congress Catalog No. 72-77244 – ISBN 0-913056-03-0

See the following link as well . . .

Wheels for the World by Douglas Brinkley is a very good overview of Henry from the beginning and FOMOCO up to modern times. One of the better books I've read.

Personal opinion here, but I feel that reading the Service Bullitens cover to cover should be mandatory when you own an A. Not just read when you have a problem or are assembing a certian part of the car. The scope of the info in them is well beyond what most poeple think. Rod

Thanks and further info request

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I have ordered two books that look interesting. Amazon reviews are usually very helpful in this regard.

Regarding the Model A Service Bulletins, I have found several versions -- hardback, paperback, 'essentials', 'original'

Can someone enlighten me on which is best to get. I am the sort who will probably read the whole thing over time. Some would say I am compulsive. I prefer to think of it a thorough.

It's alright, pdora. Some would say I'm obsessive. I prefer to agree with them.

I have the hardcover version of the Model A Ford Service Bulletins, Dan R Post. I prefer hardcover, as it's the only version that survives the abuse I put my reference books through. :D
