re-use head studs?

I also use a copper head gasket sprayed on both sides with Copper Coat. Grease should also work. And, I know a couple people that spray head gaskets with silver paint.

A local mechanic, that was working on his dirt track race car,
swore by the silver paint.

I installed the head last night with copper coat. Next I am dropping the pan and checking the bearing clearances while the valve cover is off. So it will be a while before I know if all is well.

Thank you all for all your help.

Too late now, but I guess I'd have dropped the pan and checked the clearance before bolting the head back on, just incase you find something and the rod or piston needs to come out. Hopefully that won't be the case.

A friend of mine works at a diesel truck shop (MACK) and they use the silver paint trick always for head gaskets.

oops, I should have thought of that. I was just so anxious to make progress (without getting messy) in the 1/2 hour I had to work on it last night.

Which way do you install a copper head gasket ? Fire rings up or down.?

I spoke to Snyder's yesterday and they said that with the 5:5 High Compression head to use grade 5 studs and their premium gasket and torque to 55 foot pounds. Yes 55 foot pounds...

We just went through this with a couple of club members. They had used the Model A Fel-Pro gasket from Snyders and once I showed them how it didn't fit the high compression head they all said they didn't notice. I doesn't fit the combustion chamber like the B model does. Used grade 5 bolts as well.

You cannot use a Model A head gasket with the Snyder's High Compression Head.It will overlap the combustion chamber considerably.

As I said previously in this string, Snyder's told me to use their MODEL B premium head gasket (their part B-6151-M) with their high compression head and torque the stud nuts in sequence to 55 foot pounds (they said you CAN use grade 5 studs) and run the engine slowly for 15-20 minutes, then let it cool completely, as in stone cold, six hour minimum; then re-torque to 55 ft lbs in sequence and then repeat after 500 miles. Yes, 55 foot pounds.
