Re: head studs on early FH
Good suggestions from the gurus on this site. I agree with the use of the socket type stud puller. Mac and Snap-On both make them for a whopping $65 for SINGLE puller!!!! Craftsman are a lot cheaper and work just as good. I always try to tighten them slightly first before trying to loosen one. Then I try to loosen them.
Penetrating oil: I've soaked them for WEEKS with applications several times a day of various penetrating oils. Whenever I pull a stud I always check the threads for oil. I've never seen more than the top two threads wet with penetrating oil! Guess penetrating oils just won't get into the threads on the engine I'm doing. Typical of my luck! The rust must seal them so tight even penetrating oil can't get through! Heating the exposed stud has never worked for me. I think it's because heating the stud increases the stud's diameter and makes it even tighter in the block (my opinon). The best thing I've found is to take a strain on the puller and put an acetlyene torch inside the closest water passage hole and direct the heat to the boss surrounding the stuck stud. No need to heat it cherry red, but get it pretty warm and the stud puller has never failed to begin loosening. Once it's unstuck I go with the tighten-loosen-tighten-loosen technique.
My best advice is to not get impatient and rush things. Good luck.....rumble seat
