Re-engineered Model A Transmission

Buy the Mitchell splitter. Cost analysis? A 26% increase in smiles per gallon.

In our club we call that "Smilage".

I have both the Mitchell O/D and the Mitchell Transmission. If I had to make a choice, and with the type of driving I do, I prefer the Mitchell Synchro Trans with 15% over 1st & 2nd. Closing up the gap between 2nd & 3rd makes driving really nice. The synchros are just an added bonus.

I can certainly see why Astra-Werke undertook this project since he has the ability and machines to do it. If you watch his earlier videos, he had a few not so good result but kept at it.

Good work, Astra-Werke. And thanks for sharing your "adventures".

And keep putting Smilage on your Model As and the people around you.

Instead of making the gears and shipping them himself maybe he could license the idea for a fee to someone like Mitchell or Snyder to make them for the US Market. This would avoid the international shipping costs and import duties.

I don't think Adrian posts on this Forum.
Nor do I believe he is interested in producing the gears for sale around the World. I could be wrong , but he is an extremely busy guy.

He finds solutions and fixes to problems and makes improvements where required to old machines. He is a very talented Machinist who I believe is involved in a technical position that requires knowledge of CAD Cam CNC Mill work etc etc. If you look at his videos he is interested in all old machinery not just cars. He restores all old appliances , radios , clocks , and Manufactures Doll Miniature steam engines from scratch. I think Adrian was born with a special gift in this area.

Be interesting to see what $$$ number he would come up with ,shipping to NZ is the killer .Snyders charged me $90us shipping for a set of rings to NZ.
My car actually turns heads when I engage 2nd gear...:D

Shipping from Europe doesn't seem as expensive as the states where there seems to be a minimum US$63 charge. I got an alloy carb adapter from Germany recently for 7 euro.
From NZ it may be better to get parts from the OZ dealers who seem to have reasonable prices, or use a shipper from the states that bundles multiple things.

I am going to have to look seriously into this .
The $54us set of rings cost me $220.80 nz by time I got them in my hands .Thats crazy .So you can imagine what gearbox parts would be .

The modified ratios I mentioned in post #2 were only the gears required to raise 1st and 2nd gears. raising only 2nd gear. They fit straight into the original gearbox case without modification, hence much cheaper than a Mitchell gear splitter.
The latest vendor of them I recall was in New Zealand but there had been others available for a while. It seems there wasn't enough interest for them to survive. Given nothing from the EU is cheap and the new tariff regime, I think good and all as they are, these wouldn't be a commercial success.
