Re-engineered Model A Transmission

Apart from the broken gear, was the purpose of this to raise the ratios of 1st and 2nd gears? If so, gear sets to do that have been available on and off for years. IMO, the fact that they were not continuously available suggests that there is not a big enough market. That surprises me, if true but there you go.

I think it’s partly that he’s in Germany and partly that he has access to CAD software and a modern CNC machine shop, so to him it’s a fun project at lower cost than the alternative.

Edit: After reading the video comments, Astra-Work states that 1st and 2nd are 16% higher than stock.

As per alexiskai, Astra-Werk does have access to CAD, CNC, CMM’s etc. and does enjoy these types of challenges.

Astra-Werk lives in a hilly and congested area of Germany. The higher second gear ratio enables him to climb hills and then shift into 3rd without losing momentum and holding up modern traffic. The video is worth a watch.

Well the Mitchell transmission is available with 15% over 1st & 2nd.

I have just spent 3 days making an exhaust for my 34 3w, sure I could have taken it to the muffler shop and got them too bend up one,But I have time, the gear to do it, and enjoy the work.
I made the clamps and mounts as well,
it wil. go to the coating place on Monday.
plus it keeps me interested and brain working

Sounds like a good improvement and the timing would be great for my motor and gearbox rebuild .Does Astra-Werk post on this forum ??

PS
Are all model A gearboxes that noisy ,I thought it was just mine ?!

He wants to test it more. I'd guess a year before they're available if he decides to sell some.

Be interesting to see what $$$ number he would come up with ,shipping to NZ is the killer .Snyders charged me $90us shipping for a set of rings to NZ.
My car actually turns heads when I engage 2nd gear...:D

Maybe US dealers would buy quantities and bring down the unit cost of shipping across the Pacific?
