"rare" OEM turn signals?

Model A's never had turn signals, that looks like an old universal style that is probably available today from any jobber. JMO

It's certainly a nice compact unit.

I was chuckling how usefull it could be with the single stock taillight
....you could signal left or left....
but perhaps it was indeed sold by dealers in later years as an upgrade?

Some days I learn as much studying ebay, as the forums
.....although many of their claims would nice to "unlearn";)

I just added it to my "watch list" to see how much is would sell for with that high shipping. Just as I added it the shipping dropped to $10.02.

Now the bids will come rolling in!

I saw a 30or31 4 door the other day that had factory turn signals. It was English RHD.. The turn signals were on the door post by the windshield and folded out arms. The switch was in a surface housing attached to the right side of dash. The amazing thing was that it alsom had a factory sun roof. The whole soft part of the roof slid up and back. The owner is a well known local collector with many fine cars and I don't doubt this one.

English cars certainly had fender lights, or side lights as we call them. Little replicas of the headlights, so changed 28/29 and 30/31. Stainless on passenger cars and mild steel on commercial vehicles. See the two English Cabs below.

I also attach a pic of what I was told were original fitment turn signals on English cars. They don't look particularly 'Ford' to me so willing to be corrected on that.

Final pics are unusual Ford script tail light lenses we found the museum at Beamish on the MAFCGB Tour to Northumbria. Not sure what they were originally fitted to, and again would be interested to know.

I've been collecting "A" ads for years. The 30-31 English Ford ads (both "artist conception" and "real photo") clearly show the sliding roof on the "De Luxe" Fordor. All ads depict the miniature lamps on the front fenders, but do not mention whether they were turn signals or parking lights. There are NO cowl lamps in English ads.

It's hard to tell, but "semaphore" signals do seem to appear in some ads, mounted on the windshield posts.

I was saying to someone the other day that I'd never seen a surviving English sunroof. Any chance of some pictures?

I too have never seen a sliding roof on a Fordor - but I'll keep an eye out now. Nor have I seen the semaphore turn signals on a car, English or otherwise.

As you say, no cowl lamps here.

The fender lights are just side lights. Certainly not turn signals. Like I say, the 28/29's were different - see the Phaeton below.

Thanks, Juggler, that's what I thought about the fender (wing?) lights.

Judging from my ad collection, the sliding roof was only on the "DeLuxe Fordor Saloon."

As for the semaphore turn signals, one ad seems to depict a surface-mount unit on the windshield post... not the flush-fit unit of pricier cars.

Let us know if you locate an original sliding roof.

Best regards.

I saw an original Model A in Merrillville at the MARC National Meet that has a slide top. John in Illinois, this may be the one that you are referring to.

If indeed the slide top was available for new Model A's then why wasn't it installed on all (most) Model A Town Cars. Timothy Kelly, could you shed some light on this?

Based on the ad images, the front seat roof moved "aft" OVER the rear seat roof. It would be very difficult to fit such an assemblage over the passenger compartment of a Town Car. Besides... the hired help shoulkd be outside whilst the owners remain indoors... unsullied by the sun's rays.

Dean... I JUST caught the gist of your question. If the chauffeur's roof slid back over the owner's area, it would still look (from the side) like the driver had some shelter. Hardly the purpose of a Town Car, eh?
