rain gutter installation

I have the old rain gutter and base for my 29 std coupe and after staightening them the best I could the base and gutter still don't fit together very well. They base aligns with the roof pretty well but the gutter looks like it will be way off. Any tricks to getting this looking good? Do you just mount the base and then hammer on the gutter? It looks like at one time someone drilled holes in the gutter part to get it mounted tighter to the roof. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The two parts depend upon a precise fit in order to successfully clip together. It is difficult at best to straighten the original parts once they have been removed since, unless you were ultra careful, it is so easy to stretch one or the other out of shape. That is why you see extra holes drilled in the parts, generally a result of someone giving up and settling for a few screws. At this point it might be worthwhile to consider using new aluminum extrusions available from the suppliers.

In any case, make sure the base is very straight without any "jiggles" and is secure to the roof. The gutter also must be straight. It should clip in place by hand, a hammer would have too much force and will distort both parts. Gar Williams

I found when I installed my repro rain gutters that by putting a dowel of just the right diameter in the groove of the gutter, and using a rubber mallet, I could give it a good whack and the dowel would prevent denting and distortion.

Wish I saw that dowel tip before I did my gutters. Mine came out a little mangled after trying to use a block on just the top. It worked 90% of the time but whenever the bottom popped off I had a few choice words for the gutter.

Does anyone know if reproductions of the gutter bases are available from any source? I have original gutters for my '30 Sport Coupe, but no bases. Thanks.

The repro aluminum gutter I used on my 29 coupe had the base attached to it. After forming the shape on the car I pried them apart, drilled and nailed the base in place and locked the gutter into it. I haven't heard if repro bases are available for original gutters.
